That's my granddaughter, Alexis, in the photo. She is three years old and just graduated from riding ponies-only to her first big horse. That saint of a horse under her is my retired show jumper, King, age 30. On the right is our trainer, Miss Dana, leading the Princess and the King in the round pen here on our farm last Friday night.
Why am I sharing this photo with you today? What could it possibly have to do with estate planning and elder law marketing?
So many things had to come together for us to arrive at this magical moment -- with my beloved granddaughter astride my beloved best friend. The story is too long to share here -- but suffice to say it all started on a cold morning in Park City, Utah. On that morning, I did not own a horse or a farm, my son James (Lexi's father) was not yet married, and Alexis was not even a gleam in his eye! But walking through the snow at the base of the mountain, I had a vision for a future that I hoped would look very much like this photo -- hopeful, strong and full of joy.
That vision was achieved neither quickly nor easily. Some of the steps along the way were huge -- like striking out to purchase 20 run-down acres of Kansas prairie. Some of the steps were tiny -- like polishing up an old saddle. But every step was essential to achieve the Vision.
And that is the difference between a Vision and a Dream. Dreamers seldom accomplish much of anything, despite their big talk. Visionaries, on the other hand, give feet to their Dreams. They don't just make plans, they make sacrifices. They allocate resources. They take tiny steps, and they take huge leaps of faith. Sometimes they have anxiety attacks and white knuckles. But they make it.
What is your Vision for your practice? What are you doing today to ensure this Vision becomes reality, and not just another Dream?
I see far too many attorneys who starve their Vision to death. Oh sure, they have big Dreams, but their Vision is hat-rack thin. They feed their Dreams with big talk, but starve their Vision with inaction. We talk to some of these folks ... year after year ... and year after year they sing the same sad song. They want big results from tiny investments.
Big Dreams. Tiny Vision.
If there is still a spark of Vision left in you, try feeding it today. Take action. Make a bold move. You can do it!
