If you’ve ever done a quick online search to price out a new logo design, you know that the results vary widely. While high-end firms will charge hundreds of thousands of dollars, the most eye-catching deals are often the deals that offer a custom logo for less than ten dollars. Just $10?? Of course that’s the deal most people will take. But what do you get for that low price?
I recently read an article by another skeptical designer, Sacha Greif. He went “under cover” to discover what quality logo he could get for, in this case, $5. While some of the results met my expectations, there were definitely some surprises as well.
Greif made up a fictional company, wrote a creative brief detailing what the company was looking for in a logo, and hired three designers from a low-cost site. About a week later, the submissions started rolling in. Some were pretty terrible, but a few were actually rather good. That seems like a good sign, right?
But hold on, not so fast. By doing a couple reverse image searches online, Greif discovered that all of the decent designs were rip-offs. Logos that were being sold as original artwork were either essentially purchased clipart or were already in use by several other companies. Not so good.
Bottom Line
There is nothing wrong with bargain shopping for a logo design. I would just caution you to be wary. As Greif says in his article, “people trying to deceive you by passing other people’s work as their own, and stock art as original work is another matter altogether.” When such a small sum of money is being offered, designers aren’t usually feeling very inspired to give you the very best work.
