Attitude Determines Outcome

My morning commute is mostly through an area called The Black Forest here in Colorado Springs. It's a beautiful drive through gently rolling hills and deep forest, with occasional views of Pikes Peak. I frequently see deer crossing the road.

Which is nothing new for a country girl, but it is different here in Colorado than in Kansas. Back in Kansas, I sadly saw more dead deer alongside the road than live ones crossing. I almost never see dead deer on the roadside in Colorado.

This morning, watching a big fellow cross in front of me, I realized why.

Deer in Kansas, for whatever reasons, dart across the road. They dart out in front of you and you have no chance to stop. Whenever I've seen deer cross the road in Kansas, they were running full-out, scared to death ... as if they KNOW the road is a death trap. It was like they closed their eyes and said, "Here I go, hope I make it!"

And of course, more often than not, they don't.

Colorado deer are different. They OWN the road. They step out into the road and turn and LOOK at you, as if to say, "You want a piece of me? You realize you are driving on MY road, right? And if you don't slow down and wait, I will dedicate my life to ruining yours."

The confidence with which Colorado deer cross the road slows traffic all across the state. Seriously, you don't want to hit these deer because you know it's going to wreck your car, your day, your insurance rates, and probably the rest of your month.

Colorado deer give you time to think about this.

Colorado deer understand, on some level, that attitude determines outcome. As you're growing your law firm, moving to more digital marketing, and becoming the CEO of your legal business ... don't cross the road with fear, like a Kansas deer. If you live in fear, you will probably come to a bad end!

Be a Colorado deer. Don't close your eyes and run like hell hoping for the best. Step out with confidence, stare down your challenges and OWN the road!

When Technology Makes Life Better

The other day, I witnessed an older gentlemen come into a convenient store and ask the guy behind the counter for directions to some location I can’t remember because I was hit with the realization that this used to be a normal thing people would do!

 

To be honest, if you asked me for directions to my house, I couldn’t give them to you because I don’t know the names of any of the roads, what direction to travel, or how long to travel down each road. I would just send you the address and assume your technology can take you there.

 

I never have to ask for directions anywhere. I simply get the address, plug it into my phone, and it takes me there.

 

THAT’S INSANE!

 

Technology has changed and is continuing to transform the world.

 

Do you remember all the hardships of not having GPS or Google Maps? If you never experienced it, can you imagine it?

 

My parents have told me so many stories of them getting lost or stranded somewhere because my dad didn’t know which way to go. My dad on many occasions had to stroll up to a convenient store like that older gentlemen, let go of his pride, and hope the man behind the counter had some sense of direction on where to go.

Learn Something New at Your Next Legal Conference

Is this how you walk through the exhibit hall at a legal conference? Like you're wearing a blindfold, so you won't have to see the sponsors?

To Grow Your Law Firm, Stop Doing What You've Always Done

Could a horse make you a better attorney? A better boss, team member, or even a better adviser to your clients?

What we've learned from bringing horses and attorneys together is that even the most successful lawyers gain keen insights about how to move their law firm forward -- without being lectured, scolded or spending months in a classroom.

We recently shared the wrap-up video from The Summit (see below) with Ginny Telego, a master trainer in equine assisted learning and past president of The Equine Experiential Education Association (E3A). We wanted her reaction to the attorney's comments, and especially to know whether our clients' experiences were unique or unusual.

What follows are excerpts from that interview.

IMS: What was your first impression from watching the video?

I was struck by the powerful learning that these attorneys gained from doing experiential learning with the horses. 

IMS: What do you think were the core concepts the attorneys learned?

To me, the core concepts that came through in their interviews were that they

1. Overcame uncertainty in working with the horses;
2. Realized how much could be learned when you don't know what to do;
3. They really gained self-awareness of how they interact with staff; and
4. The need to establish trust with their clients by focusing on what the clients need and not on what the attorneys do.

IMS:  Ginny, you have so much experience bringing horses and professionals together, I know you weren't surprised at what these lawyers had to say about working with the horses. Could you take a few moments to explain more about each of these core concepts?

Sure. These outcomes are not surprising but they do speak to the powerful learning that comes from participating in a workshop such as the one offered at Legacy Ranch.

Looking at each of those concepts:

• They overcame uncertainty in working with the horses – Too often our response to uncertainty is to look backward or see it as a wall to moving forward. To those who are risk averse, uncertainty is very disconcerting. Being willing to overcome that uncertainty and still try different solutions is what can help business leaders move forward when faced with the unknown.
  
  
• Realized how much could be learned when you don't know what to do and how working with their teams, they were able to look beyond their comfort zones to find solutions that worked – Not knowing what to do can be a very uncomfortable place for leaders. It makes them feel vulnerable. Imagine if business leaders, like the teams working with the horses, looked to their team when they don’t know what to do, instead of trying to pretend they know and making decisions that are not in the best interest of the organization?
  
  
• Gained self-awareness of self and interactions with staff – Self awareness is one of the pillars of emotional intelligence yet is elusive to far too many business professionals, regardless of their position in an organization. Gaining this competence is what leads to better interactions with team members at all levels of an organization. If you want to reduce employee turnover, spend some time with a horse.
  
  
• The need to establish trust with their clients by focusing on what the clients need and not on what the attorneys do. – I think the comments from the attorney who shared this insight are pretty self explanatory of how his shift in thinking will likely lead to not just better relationships with his current clients but make him a sought-after attorney by other clients. People want to feel heard – they don’t want you to give them your resume and accomplishments. They can read all of that on your website. But when you truly step back and listen to what they need from you, that is when they will choose to follow you – which is what this attorney experienced in his time with the horses at The Summit.

IMS:  When it comes to leadership development, what's unique about working with  horses?

For business professionals, it’s easy to read articles or attend seminars on how to be a better leader, how to implement problem solving strategies, how to communicate better with clients, etc…. but reading or sitting through a presentation and doing are two very different things. And given the choice, most of us will revert to our comfort zone (doing what we’ve always done) despite reading articles or attending seminars.

For anyone who truly wants to see how “not doing what we’ve always done” can help their business scale up, participating in experiential learning with horses in a qualified program can put you ahead of your competitors.

Because horses require us to look at how we are communicating our vision and intention, they present the opportunity to dig deep and think differently about how we are leading, communicating or approaching strategy. These experiences are easily translated back to your business or law firm, as evidenced by the comments from the attorneys in the video. Change happens through action and only firms that can adapt and look for solutions outside of their “normal” channels will remain successful in today's rapidly changing business environment.

Ginny Telego is past president of the Board of Directors of the Equine Experiential Education Association (E3A), an international professional membership organization offering training, certification, business development and resources for the implementation of Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) programs by educators, coaches, professional development trainers and other facilitators.  She is both a Certified Advanced Practitioner and Master Trainer for E3A and has traveled nationally and internationally to facilitate equine assisted leadership development as well as to train and certify new E3A practitioners. Winter Repose: The Quiet Where Dreams Grow

The quiet of winter blanketed the Ranch this morning. I love this time of year, it may be my favorite. The holiday hustle is almost over, there's a new year on the horizon -- full of promise and possibility. 

But for the moment, in this moment, there is a quiet. 

This is the winter repose, the quiet where dreams grow, silently undisturbed, to fruition in the spring.

So it's perfectly fitting to focus this week on what's coming up here at IMS in 2018, because our biggest dreams are to help make yours come true!

On the Homefront: Completing the Relocation

As many of you know, we started our Colorado relocation in August this year, with the purchase of Legacy Ranch. Right now, we are still headquartered in Olathe, KS and managing a major transition. The Olathe office lease expires in June 2018, when we will open our new Colorado Springs office! The move opens up new avenues for growth and opportunities that simply were not available in Kansas. Of course, Legacy Ranch is the first, but there is so much more.

Colorado Christian University

We have started a formal relationship with the marketing department at Colorado Christian University (CCU). Our first project starts January 15th with an independent-study for-credit internship. We will be working with one of CCU's brightest young stars, Amy Edison. Her studies with us will focus on digital marketing research and service delivery. We also are collaborating on an upcoming book release on personal branding. 

Legacy Ranch 

Of course, we continue to offer Strategic Planning Firm Retreats at Legacy Ranch (our first one of the new year kicks off January 3rd!) But there's more to the Ranch that strategy! We're teaming up with leadership experts from across the country to offer law firm leadership and coaching programs. One of my favorite new programs focuses on Women Leading in Law. Our guest trainer for this program shares a true passion for helping women navigate the challenges of leadership positions in business and law firms.

Digital Presence Management 

Digital marketing is in a constant state of change. There definitely is never a dull moment when it comes to helping our clients succeed online! Each year, Google changes its search algorithm 500 to 600 times! Staying on top of all these changes, and implementing across client accounts, is an incredible challenge.

One thing to know about SEO in 2018:

Google announced last year that it makes decisions about which businesses to show up on page one of the search engine results based on what other people are saying about them.

Google said the 3 most important factors to local rank are:

1. Relevance of the website to the search query, 
2. Distance of the business address from the searcher, and
3. Prominence, in this case defined as a business's reputation -- which includes review count and rating.

So what Google is saying is that it’s literally ranking your business in local search based on how many reviews you have, and how good those reviews are. If you don’t manage your reviews, you’re risking whether your business will even show up in search.

Strategic Planning: Does it Really Make Any Difference?

Day Three and your Strategic Planning Retreat is winding down. You have taken three days out of your busy schedule to disengage from the workaday treadmill, retreat, relax and recharge. You have explored the why's behind almost everything you do in your practice. You have defined a strategy, set goals and made plans to achieve them. You may have discovered your own story and recorded the foundation shots for your brand story video.

Chances are, you're pretty tired -- mentally, emotionally and physically -- as you cruise into the afternoon. 

That's okay because most of your work is done now. It's time to relax in the sunroom or on the back deck with a cold drink (or two). Reflect on what you've learned, discovered, and planned.

After two full days at your Legacy Ranch strategic planning retreat, what happens on Day Three?

While every retreat is different and every firm has different goals, often our clients will spend the morning of Day Three working on their brand story video. James Campbell and Mike Campbell collaborate on this process, which really started back on Day One.

But Day Three is when the magic happens!

Since James is the master storyteller, I’ll let him describe the process.

James pitches the brand story script and storyboard, working with our client Frank Campbell of Annapolis, MD.

3 Big Brand Story Questions

• What compels a human being to hire you?
• What makes you the better choice?
• What is your unique value?

We have asked these three questions to every estate and elder law attorney that invests in a private firm retreat. In fact, we ask these same questions at various stages of their experience.  We find that their answers are drastically different by the end of Day Two. 

Top 5 Initial Answers:

1. Peace of mind.
   Our firm provides clients with peace of mind.
2. Holistic approach.
   We look at multiple aspects of the clients financial and tax strategies. Very comprehensive planning.
3. Focused on long term relationships.
   We don’t just sell documents. We focus on lasting relationships.
4. Customer service and communication.
   We provide great customer service and clients love our staff.
5. Board certification (expertise etc).
   I also went to law school and I’m a member of a national organization of attorneys.

Literally every client gives these answers on Day One. Would any of these make your list as well? Maybe all of them? Now, I’m not saying there is anything wrong with the Top 5 answers. I hope they are all true. But let’s be clear, if you are marketing yourself with those messages just understand that everybody else is too. 

Let’s evaluate the questions a bit before we go too much further into discussing your unique value.

What Compels a Human Being to Hire You?

Remember your prospective clients are human beings. They have hopes, fears, problems and goals. They have deadlines and responsibilities. Why would an actual person hire you?

What Makes You the Better Choice?

Do not ever forget that your clients, prospective clients and referral sources have choices. AND they are being consistently persuaded to choose someone else. Why would they choose to hire and stay with you?

What is Your Unique Value?

Your answer to this question should help better answer the first two. Your Unique Value lies in your individual experiences as well as your firm’s mission and core values. The reasons why you provide peace of mind.  Why you have a holistic approach. Why you spent the time and energy for a board certification. Your experiences are relatable. Relatability leads to trust. Once people “feel good” about you, your brand and your core values, they “feel good” about hiring you.

Telling your brand story at a private firm retreat is as much about discovery as it is strategic planning.  Once you have discovered your story and told it through emotionally compelling video, your marketing takes on a whole new life. Competition no longer exists because you provide a service and unique experience no one else is able to provide.

What's it Like?

What is it like to work this closely with your team and discover your own story? While for some attorneys this does not seem like a difficult process, for others it can be quite intimidating.
